Three Kinds of Gratitude

Oct 28, 2026

Abiding in gratitude soothes an anxious, confused mind and draws us back to Christ. Mercifully simple and liberating, gratitude helps us descend from our noisy heads to our quiet hearts, beneath the tumult of fear and analysis.  Giving glory to God for all things is the most effective way to return to inner warmth, trust, and calm. When it comes to gratitude's stabilizing benefits, more is always better!

Here are three ways to align your day and your life with a mindset of abundant gratitude:

In Thought

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

- Philippians 4:8

There are many beautiful things to focus on: art, nature, scripture, creativity, hospitality, and, of course, our numerous blessings. When I view everything through the lens of thanksgiving, what I already have becomes more precious and fulfilling. Choose content that uplifts and inspires. Meditate on Christ and appreciate the beauty that still exists in the world and in each person you meet.

In Word

"The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit."

- Proverbs 15:4

Gossip, ranting, lecturing, etc. darken our perspectives and leave us vulnerable to the spirit-crushing effects of pride and despair.  Speaking words of encouragement and gratitude, however, opens our senses to light and goodness, enlivening not only our own weary souls but the souls of those around us. By setting our intention to curb our complaining and instead express thanks for our many blessings, we renew our mindset and find relief from despondency.

In Deed

Only fear the Lord and serve Him with all your heart for you know what great things He has done for you.

- 1 Kingdoms 12:24

Gratitude expressed through our actions manifests as fruitfulness and compassion. By cultivating and multiplying our God-given talents and by being responsible stewards of our bodies, minds, homes, and relationships, we demonstrate our gratitude for God's goodness and provisions in our daily lives. When our work is infused with gratitude, it becomes energizing rather than draining, allowing what often feels mundane to take on new meaning and eternal significance.

This very day is a day the Lord has made, and within it is all we need for our sustenance, growth, and salvation. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
